Sal is a flat island. For Santa Maria, Espargos and most main attractions, a standard car is sufficient. For Buracona, Ponta Preta or more isolated beaches, an SUV may be more comfortable.

Espargos is the administrative capital of Sal and sits right next to Amilcar Cabral International Airport (SID), only two kilometres from the terminal. It is a Cape Verdean working town more than a tourist hub: a central square with the church, a municipal market, bakeries and small eateries serving cachupa at local prices. For travellers landing late or flying out early, staying in Espargos avoids the 18 km transfer to Santa Maria and the cost of the taxi. Cars can be picked up directly at the airport car park. From Espargos, Buracona is 12 km away and the Pedra de Lume salt flats just 5 km — both quicker than from Santa Maria. Accommodation and meals typically run 30 to 40 percent cheaper than in the southern resort zone.
