What type of car is recommended for exploring Santiago?

For the main roads and Praia city, any car category is suitable. If you plan to visit Serra Malagueta or rural areas with dirt tracks, we recommend an SUV or 4x4.

Can I explore the whole island of Santiago with the rental car?

Yes! Santiago has a good network of paved roads. The Praia to Tarrafal route is well-maintained and allows you to explore the entire island with ease, including stops at Assomada, Tarrafal and Serra Malagueta.

Assomada, seat of the Santa Catarina municipality, lies 50 km north-west of Praia and is the rural heart of Santiago. The drive up from the capital climbs to nearly 600 metres and crosses a mountainous landscape dominated by the Pico da Antonia massif. The town is known for its traditional market, the most authentic in the country, especially busy on Wednesdays and Saturdays — selling grogue, goat cheese, cassava and fruit from the surrounding valleys. A few kilometres away lies the village of Boa Entrada, with its centuries-old kapok tree, and the green Engenhos valley. The road on to Tarrafal in the north of the island runs through Assomada and is in good condition. A standard car handles most routes; only secondary village tracks call for an SUV.
